Jason McDonald enjoyed a successful career in Sydney as an award winning graphic designer before returning to the family farm near Mudgee where he grew up surrounded by nature. His absolute affinity with the bush shines through all his art practice and has won him much critical acclaim. Capturing the minute detail of plants and creatures through the eye of the lens, McDonald truly accentuates beauty in a micro world.
In this most recent collection, Magpies & Flowers created especially for Loft Mudgee, Jason presents a delightful portrait series of his orphan magpies. Rescued on the family farm, they soon ingratiated into both home and heart providing pure talent for a quick photographer. The stylised monochromatic compositions contrasted with vintage jugs and colourful fresh cut flowers from his garden lead us to examine nostalgic notions of childhood, memory, colour and play.
In 2018 Jason featured his first exhibition in Mudgee and since then has appeared in group shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. More recently, was selected as a finalist in the National Capital Art Prize, ACT, 22 Sep-12 Oct 2022 and will be exhibiting at On the Edge: Species at Risk, Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, 18 Mar-2 Apr 2023.
